NFPA 70B is the consensus standard for electrical equipment maintenance.
It sets out how to build an electrical maintenance program, how to assess the condition of equipment, and how often maintenance and inspection should happen. In 2023 it moved from a recommended practice to a standard, which changed how it is written — in the language of requirements rather than suggestion.
That change is often misreported. NFPA 70B is not law. It binds where an authority having jurisdiction, a permit, an insurer or a contract adopts it. For most data centers it arrives indirectly: insurer engineering standards expect inspection evidence, auditors ask for it, and contracts assume it. FM Global Data Sheet 5-20, as one example of an insurer engineering standard, directs annual infrared surveys of electrical equipment.
For a data center, the practical weight sits in three ideas.
Condition, not the calendar, drives how often equipment is maintained.
Condition has to be assessed, not assumed.
And intervals — plus the justification for any change to them — belong in a documented program.
Which means the question you will actually be asked is not whether you follow NFPA 70B. It is whether you can show it.
