In Madhavan's words
What did the technicians and operators tell you that you don't hear anywhere else?
“That every facility is different. The written guidelines are only the baseline. Doing the actual work, and handling an emergency when it happens, takes hands-on experience and knowing that facility end to end, through and through. One site engineer told me about a weekend when his facility called him in without warning to deal with an overheating electrical unit. That showed me the discipline and adaptability this work takes. The people who run these sites stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings every day, but they're also grateful when everything is normal and running. Each facility is a world of its own.”
Why focus on the buildings behind AI instead of the AI itself?
“Because data centers are the bedrock of modern AI. What fascinates me is how all the moving parts work together, like how the cooling and electrical systems keep pace with the compute, especially as these facilities become more autonomous and intelligent. There's something compelling about applying AI inside the very buildings that run AI. That's where robotics comes in. It makes the work, and the lives, of the people in these facilities better, and by extension it strengthens the facilities themselves.”
